Let training commence!

This blog should have started nearly three weeks ago. I had intended that, right from Day One of 2014 I would begin in earnest my training for the Yorkshire Marathon, my first full marathon since being breaking my femur in 2004 and being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2008 (a week before I was due to run my ‘comeback’ marathon after the 2004 disaster!).

So, what went wrong? Well, before the year had even started I found myself desperately ill with a vile sickness bug that started on December 27th. It dragged on and on, well into the New Year, and I wondered whether I would ever feel well again. I lost 16 pounds in weight, had ketones up to 6.6, and my blood sugars went crazy. Hundreds more tests and at least three times as many daily injections were required to try and keep on top of things. It was my first real illness as a diabetic, so a big learning curve for me. How to reduce ketones when you can’t eat or drink anything? How to keep hydrated? Very difficult!

Spot when things went wrong!
At the height of my illness I had to keep my wits about me on the 3rd of January to try and secure my place in the Yorkshire Marathon – I succeeded!

Thankfully, I have now recovered and begun to put some of the weight back on. And finally, on Saturday 18th January I was able to commence my training. Just a short jog around the local streets, but so pleased to finally be starting on my journey!
